How I stumbled on the "cure" for my Blepharitis
I first developed Blepharitis in my left eye during my early 40's, around 2006. Which is quite young to develop Blepharitis. I had periodic outbreaks, big red lumps on my eyelids that lasted for months.
NOT a good look.
Over time they became worse and worse, and more and more frequent.
Soon I was getting really large lumps on my eyelids that were bright red.
I looked like an old dog, I was going grey, I wasn't happy about it. They were painful at times as well, certainly, the larger ones were uncomfortable. It wasn't vanity alone.
Often they would produce a bump large enough to protrude into the interior of my eyelid, which rubbed my eye all day whenever I moved my eyes.
I hated the things.
But every doctor and every source of information I turned to said the same thing: Blepharitis was "incurable" and that the best I could hope for was by dint of a twice-daily routine to keep the number of outbreaks down.
Does any of what follows sound familiar?
I was told to wash my eyes day and night with warm mildly soapy water, massaging the eyelids gently downwards. Then to towel my eyes gently dry and use antibiotic eyedrops regularly.
Which I did.
To little or no discernible effect. I still had outbreaks of Blepharitis, and they continued to get more severe, more frequent and on average they seemed to last longer.
My eyesight was getting worse and worse, too. My eyes were so dry and poorly lubricated even though I went everywhere with eyedrops as a result of Blepharitis that my vision was often "smeared".
The day my life changed (and hopefully yours, too)
One day eating breakfast in Morocco with my wife at a local cafe I overheard a woman talking about her old dogs "goopy eyes". Ok, I was eavesdropping! I heard how the poor animal had terrible trouble with his eyes, that it had started when he had gotten old. But, if she just gave the dog some powdered vitamin C with his breakfast the dog's eyes were soon "cured". But she had to keep giving the dog vitamin C or the disease returned.
I never did hear how she persuaded the dog to eat the vitamin C if you are wondering.
I was willing to try anything at this point, and what did I have to lose by using vitamin C every day? For that matter, what do you?
My routine to "cure" my Blepharitis
If you have some health issue with vitamin C, or with the way it is encapsulated, etc, or just because it's your health you should check with your doctor first before trying vitamin C.
With some experimentation, I learned that not only did it work, it worked wonderfully. That is what I believe.
I have found that between 1,000 mg (1 gram) and 1,500 mg (1.5 grams) of time release vitamin C taken in the morning works best.
My stomach is sensitive in the morning and vitamin C is acidic, I have learned to wait to take it until I eat.
My first case of Blepharitis was in 2008. I have not had a case of Blepharitis since 2012 when I started taking vitamin C in this way and I believe that taking vitamin C is the cause.
The "cure" is not really a cure strictly speaking because you have to keep taking vitamin C, but that's not so hard, and it's not very expensive.
Now I use this kind (I don't make any money from you using the link) which are time-release, non-GMO, Vegan, Gluten Free and Soy Free.
I refrigerate them to prevent them from degrading due to heat, and I recommend you do the same, or at least store them somewhere cool and away from sunlight or heat if you live in a hot climate.
So give it a try for long enough that you know whether or not it works for you. It would be great to hear from everyone, whatever your results are, so I can publish at least a count of those those for whom it works and know for sure that it works for more than me and a couple of people I happen to know.
Meibomianitis
I don't know if this will work for meibomianitis but it may as there is some evidence the two diseases are linked. If anyone has it and tries it and it works please let me know, so I can tell other people here as well.
Please Note
It did not help heal the outbreak I had that was active when I started using vitamin C. This will not fix your eyelids if you currently have an outbreak. It prevents Blepharitis outbreaks.
It has prevented me from having any others, ever again.
That was my last one. I have never had Blepharitis since I started taking time-release vitamin C every day, or almost every day, not since 2012.
An odd side effect perhaps, or just an odd coincidence?
One thing I have noticed is if I take a lot of vitamin C for weeks without a break, or if I use a lot of the soluble vitamin C tablets as well as taking the time release pills in the morning, which I do as I like the flavour, I find my morning eyes often sting, as if they are acidic.
It's as if the vitamin C is being secreted through my eyes and the "sleep" in my eyes is stinging as a result.
You can stop this by reducing the amount of vitamin C you take each day, I ended up stopping using the soluble vitamin C on top of the time-release doses and since then I have nt
It may be this is the way it works. That by acidifying the lubricating fluid that is secreted by the glands in my eyelids it is made thinner and so less likely to block or to become crusty, or that the acidity increase suppresses the growth of some microorganism that lives in or on my eyes producing the "cure" I am not allowed to call a "cure".
I keep a box of tissues next to my bed or use my wife's wet wipes to clean my eyes on waking. The morning eyes can really sting if I rub them before I wash my face. So periodically I take a break for a few days or stop guzzling vitamin C, and it settles down.
I would like to say that while I have always taken a multivitamin I am not big on alternative medicine.
For instance, I am very sceptical about taking a lot of vitamins, though having said that it does appear that as I have aged the way my body stores or otherwise handles water-soluble vitamins at least has profoundly changed.
I do not believe that megadoses of vitamin C as Linus Pauling and others once claimed provides myriad benefits, or is some kind of miracle cure.
But at least in this case, in the instance of Blepharitis, it works.
I put this site up to get the word out because my doctor did not believe me, and I could not get anyone to listen to me. I emailed the NHS, doctors don't care much for "anecdotes".
I was taught wisdom comes from listening. I have also learned that everyone has something to teach you, no matter how humble they appear. I don't think my views on wisdom and that everyone has something to teach one is shared by doctors or institutions like Medicine.
If it works for you it would be a big help if you donated something towards keeping this site up. I don't make any money from the Amazon links, those are just example products, ones I use.
If it supports itself it will stay up, if not it won't.
So to keep this site going I and it depends on donations.
You can also help others, and me, by sharing this site and talking about your experience with vitamin C and Blepharitis by using any of the social media buttons below. Or just by emailing the URL or address to a friend you know who has red lumpy eyes.
I cannot promise anything, this may not work for you or for all cases of Blepharitis. But it worked for me, and for my stepmother and a friends mother. It is hard for me to imagine anyone coming to any harm from trying it.
After all, it is just vitamin C.

Post Script
I really did try to tell the medical authorities about my experiences and later those of others who have tried it.
It seems the practice of medicine leads to a certain difficulty in hearing if the person speaking is a patient.
Nor has any of the advice from WebMD or the NHS changed. Even though I contacted them and have told more than one doctor.
The Wikipedia Page for Blepharitis says nothing different from when I first looked at it all those years ago.
There is no way I am the first person to have made this observation.
How many people, like me, have sat in front of a doctor and said excitedly, like I did?
"Hey, doc! I've found a cure for Blepharitis! It's just a vitamin C deficiency. Blepharitis isn't incurable after all! I guess as people age the way their body's use or store vitamins changes, or something, right?!"
They were about as interested and as credulous as if I had told them I had squeezed a blackhead that morning and found the cure for cancer as a result.
I read once that for the practice of medicine to change the current generation devoted to the status quo has to die off.
Surely we are capable of better, and of being less institutionally deaf to good sources of information? Like the people having the experiences, you know, patients.
I hope so.
